Institutional Logos

We had to come up with a range of logos for our film productions which would feature at the very beginning of our opening so we thought up and created different ideas and decided on which we felt was most appropriate for our filming with regards to our genre.
These are some of our ideas:

We decided to incorporate our group name within one of our designs. The colour blue also fits in with our genre of psychological thriller as it is a symbol of this genre through the use of water and mirrors.
The idea of this institutional logo is that the waves are crashing like the sea which reveals the name of the institution 'Blue Productions'.

We decided to give this as an idea as pearl and the colour pink can be shown to be precious and innocent which can be conveyed as one of the themes in our film. The clam would open up showing the two pearls with the lettering inside in a fancy writing style (which is still readable).

Moonlit productions gives and eerie feel and a sense of mystery so we decided to go with a logo based around this idea. It shows a full moon and half moon within the logo and the camera will slowly pan around the moon revealing the title as it goes. The title will twinkle as it fades out.

Drawn by Jess Foster
We would then need a second, motionless institutional logo for the niche market. This was one of our ideas which shows an eagle eye symbolises courage and bravery as this could be seen as the solution of our film suggesting dominance. The titling would be in a decorative writing.

Notes and images on props and costumes (initial)

We have selected a small blue bow for the young child to wear when she goes missing. The Blue represents the psychological thriller meaning, it represents water and mirrors which are most related to psychological thrillers. We also went for a light blue to connnote innocence for the young girl who will be wearing the bow.

At the end of the film opening, in the scene with the mother, father and the young child the father takes his briefcase showing he is a business man on his way out to work. We have selected a black case to make him look professional and show he works in a professional enviroment.

In the montage scenes there are scenes including a tick list of paper on a clipboard, the tick list has the titles on them, one by one getting ticked off. We will use a black clipboard to add a dark atmosphere to the scenes, connoting danger and death.

School uniform for little girl.
White shirt with grey pinifor and blue cardigan and tie
Tends to show innocence and symbolises genre.
In the media industry, childrens innosence is often exaggerated to further seperate them from the adult world to create an image of the 'baddies' and 'goodies' in the film.
This can be shown through the use of clothing so we have gone with a school uniform with colours that rae used to portray innoncece strongly.

The main male in the film (dad) will be seen wearing a suit as he is a business man with a high authority job so he needs to be conveyed this way. In our opening, he is not seen as a major colour so a grey will be used for the suit.
This shows a lab coat as the main woman in our opening (mum) as she is a scientist. The use of white clothing shows innocence and purity and could lead to suggest she is going to resolve the main issue of the storyline.
By using the colour white also shows how similar she is to the innocence of her child whcih would further portray her naivity towards the world and therefore making more a shock when she finds out things are not so.

The black hoodie will be used for the villain in our film as it immediately connotes darkness and evil. This could also suggest death.

We have decided to go for old tatty boots as they would come across scary to the audience. We may think about using the colour black instead of this light colour to portray the evil and darkness further,

We also thought about giving the villain a more normal dress sense as it contradicts the colour black and therefore contradicts the evil making him look less obvious to the audience. However, we have still included the colour red which connotes death and blue to incorporate the genre of the film but in a more casual sense.

Feedback on the Final Storyboard

Once we finished our second draft of the storyboard we got another group to look at it and give us feedback on what they thought about it.
This is the feedback that we received:

Positive Feedback:
Its really detailed.
We really like the way you've thought about the title and how you want to do it.
Overall you have a really good idea.

Constructive Feedback:
I think you should get rid of the conversation between the girl and her parents at the end and just stop it at the girl walking down the stairs.

Our group then talked about the feedback that we received and said that the only reason we should keep the conversation at the end is so that it doesn't look like a trailer, by having a normal piece at the end the audience don't know whats going to happen so we can keep it as a really good open narrative and it also looks like an opening and not a trailer.

1st Draft Storyboad

This is our first draft storyboard. The benefits we get from this is that we can play about with our opening idea's and finalize them roughly so that we know exactly what we are doing when it comes to our final storyboard.

Considering Mise-en-scene

Mise en scene is a major part of our film opening we thought in great detail about what we would need to include in order to make our
film opening as realistic and as effective as possible.
first Scenes/section:
In the first part of our film we have the montages with various news reports, cctv screens and a ticklist of names being ticked off
one by one.
News reports:
In the news reports there will be studio lighting therefore being realistic like normal news reporting studio does. The actors will all
be wearing suites to look smart and will all have make up to match the character. They will be sat at desks and will have either a
backdrop of a news reporting stuido or we will edit one in.
Props needed:
There is no main props needed for the news reports other than paper for the characters to look like they are reading
and speaking out the facts. We can buy paper or just take A4 paper from one of our teams homes. The tables and chairs that will be required
will either be borrowed from CVHS if permition is given or will be borrowed from another person from our teams home.

CCTV:
In the CCTV scenes of the montage there will be a young child on the screen of a TV or PC which can be seen by the camera and therefore
the auidence. The lighting will be natural as it is recorded but may be changed during editing depending on the effects available
and what effect is most effective and realistic.
Props needed:

In the CCTV filming we will need a live CCTV camera linked up to a TV or PC. One of the team members has a CCTV camera on their house
which is linked up to a TV, we will use this for our filming.
Tick List Scene:
During the montage there will be scenes of a list with one item being ticked off at a time. We have cleverly thought to add out titles
onto the tick list so each time we see the tick list a title will be shown and ticked off. In editing we will use an effect that highlights
one line per shot of the ticklist.
Props needed:
For these clips we will simply need a clipboard with paper attached and pen which we can borrow from school with permission.
Field Scene:
In this scene the young girl is walking in a field before the camera twitches and the girl has gone.
Props needed:
The young girl will need to wear her school uniform which the team will purchase. The young girl is wearing a bow in her hair and the bow is left
on the floor when she has left.
Bathroom Scene:
In this scene the young child is cleaning her teeth while looking in the mirror. As she bends down to spit the toothpaste into the sink
the villain is standing behind her looking into the mirror. When the young girl looks up and walks out of the room we see that the villain has gone.
Props needed:
In this scene we will need a toothbrush and toothpaste for the young girl to use which the team will buy. There will need to be a mirror on
the wall of the bathroom used large enough for the camera to see the characters in.
Breakfast Scene:
In this scene the young girl walks downstairs into the ktchen where her mother and father are eating breakfast and talking. She eats breakfast before
her father leaves for work. She stays in the kitchen talking to her mother.
Props needed:
The props needed for this scene will be the perfect set of stairs which allow the camara to get the correct angles on. There will also need to be a spotless
kitchen with everything put away apart from breakfast. The props for breakfast will be bowls of cereal, cereal boxes, 2 cups of coffee and a glass of juice
for the child. A newspaper which the father will be reading and the father will also pick up his briefcase on the way out. We will borrow these props from
one of the team member's family.

Considering Location

When choosing your setting you have to consider Mise-en-scene. As a group we have chosen carefully to what and where we have considered setting our opening regarding Mise en scene and fitting with our Genre and storyline.

We have considered using a kitchen as one of our settings in our opening, as it is a perfect example and realistic place to show typical family life for a happy family. We are happy with this type of setting as it is a typical environment for a family to spend there mornings before school, work and for breakfast, preparing for the day.
We do not have to depend on weather for high key lighting in this setting to connote a safe and warm light hearted, and happy environment this is due to it being an interior setting. Filming in an interior setting it means that we can depend on our actors to do a good job with the interruption and distraction by others who are not involved in the film.

According to our research on Psychological thrillers, it is expected from a personal view and from the public that reflection from water and mirrors is expected to be in a Psychological thriller. This setting is key to our opening as it is the first time the viewer is introduced to the villain.
This is also an interior setting, which it allows us to have control over lighting and to not be disturbed. Choosing an interior setting is easy access and means it is more viable for us to attain the realism within our setting opposing to choosing a setting, like a spaceship.

This exterior setting is eerie and fits with our genre, as it is a typical warehouse abandoned setting perfect for the role of our villain.
The broken pieces of wood on the floor can connote the breaking of society during our film and opening connoting to the audience when they see this image in the montage of reporters, it gives a glimpse of what it about to come a connotes danger.
However our main concern is considering weather, whether it will effect our filming. We have chosen our perfect weather type below. Grey cloud, low key lighting. For example we would have to frequently consult the weather online and on TV. This time of year is perfect for this weather, but we can alter this on the editing software. Filming this particular setting in sunshine would effect the feel of our scene which we are trying to connote and deliver to our audience. We would also have to make sure that we film what we want to film on the particular day as the weather could change.

This ware house setting is also suitable considering genre and also a setting for the villain in our opening. It suggests danger, as it consists or the colours red, black. It is an interior setting which ables us to control lighting and all elements of Mise-en-scene. We would not have to hinder about weather conditions and the setting is appropriate for the desired character.
The setting allows us not to rush the film as it is interior and not worry about changes within the set.

This is an exterior setting, which can leave us hindering upon the weather as we would have to film everything we wanted on that particular day as we can not depend on the weather not changing.
The set is key for our opening as we have Abigail the small child walk across showing her legs walking and 'twitching' in the frame and the key moment of her bow being left on the ground. The conifers and fencing would be cut out of the shot making it look like a field open to the public.
Our main concern would be weather.

We do not have to worry about permission as all these settings belong to the home owner. All has been approved and we have permission.

Film and Opening Briefs

We were given a task to write up to film briefs (one for the whole film and one for the opening) using 25 words or less in order to sum up the film and opening.

Opening Brief:
When an unexpected visitor prays on innocent children. A stressed society battles with the confusion of the missing chidren. Who is next?

Whole Film Brief:
As children begin to disappear throughout Southern England, one woman is left to unravel the truths behind the sequence of terrifying events.

List of Scenes

We have created a list of scenes based upon our final storyboard and based on our whole film idea.  By doing this task it ables us to consider the film as a whole and give us more depth in to thinking about our opening. Knowing the whole film can help us gage what to put into our opening giving a slight hint and to steer us away from keeping it from looking like a trailer. We can look at what themes we would like to put into our film, and to gain inspiration from other films, as we have looked at openings and films as a whole in our genre which is Physiological Thriller.

  •  Opening scene, where we are introduced to the new reporters stressing about children missing, creating a montage of reporters which was inspired by the opening of 'Dawn of the Dead' (2004). We are also introduced to the small child 'Abigail' and her home life and also introduced to the villain.
  • We are shown the Mothers home life and work, 'biology teacher' and her commitment to her family.
  • We move onto the villains lower half (mid-shot) , creating a collage of photo's of the children he has taken, and drawing in his notepad his idea of traps (close up) etc and writing his 'Tick List'.
  • Abigail's behavior changes which does not go unnoticed and the twitches start to happen more frequently.
  • Abigail goes missing and it stresses the mother, who is trying to convince others to help her find her child and of those who has gone missing.
  • More children go missing, the situation is spiraling out of control as the mother has noticed that parents are starting to forget about their children.
  • The mother comes face to face with the villain and take memory notes of what she saw trying to figure out how and what she is going to do to get the others back.
  • The mother uses her knowledge on biology to take samples of DNA left on the 'Tick-list' she found to get inspiration and to find out what the creature is and discovers that he is trying to create a mutated army to take over the government.
  • Mother is started to see reflections of her daughter and other children in water and mirrors etc.
  • She confronts the villain to discover that she has to sacrifice either her daughters life or her own to save other children's lives or for the sake of her own happiness and the sanity of the government and humanity.
  • She sacrifices her life to save her daughters and others and kisses Abigail and tells her she loves her, before she is taken with them.

Mind Map with ideas for the film.

This is the spider diagram that we made of all the ideas that we have for our film, we decided on the genre as being a psychological thriller as well as looking at the narrative of the film. Once we looked at other student films we decided that premonitions came up too often so we have looked for a different narrative. By setting out the themes, characters, scenes and film setting in smaller spider diagrams we were able to look at them in more detail. Overall by doing this it really helped us to decide on the ideas for our film.

Certification

For our film opening, we had to consider certification in order to create boundaries for the viewing audiences.
Taking into consideration the different aspects of each age certification we, as a group, have decided to give our film a 15 certification.
This means no-one younger than 15 may see a ‘15’ certified film in a cinema and no-one under the age of 15 may rent or buy a ‘15’ rated video work.
We have chosen this as it will allow us to incorporate the required aspects of our genre such as the horror. A 15 allows a strong threat and menace unless sadistic or sexualised which is what we are aiming for and dangerous behaviour. However, this behaviour will not be in too much detail in order for it not to be copied.
We may also look at using strong language at times in the piece and a 15 rating allows us to do this as long as it isn’t aggressive and repeated.
An 18 certified film focuses more on sex aspects of filming and as we are creating a psychological thriller, this would not be a big issue so this is why our film will not be rated an 18.
Also we felt that the 12/12A rating would be too low as we figured it would restrict us too much in the way in which we would incorporate the horror in the film with possible frequent disturbing sequences.

Target Audience Profile

Our film is a psychological thriller which is aimed at a British audience of whom are interested in mystery and common affairs. We are targeting the class groups B through to E, people of middle management, creativeness and teachers down to students and casual workers as all of these will be able to relate to our film. Our film is based on a topic that is frequently brought up in the news which makes it easier for the variety of different demographic groupings to relate to the film. We are aiming our film at both men and women of about 16 years and above as there isn’t anything to single out either men or women, the film depicts both genders equally.
The Hypodermic Needle Theory can be applied to the genre of our film as a lot of real life is placed in psychological thrillers meaning that some people watching the film may go out into the real world and carry out what they have seen. The Gratification Theory (Mc Quail 1987) can be applied to the film itself as it can relate the audience members to the characters and the plot.

Sunday 13 February 2011

Notes and Ideas on Audiences

1. How are other films in your chosen genre certified? What are the top ten films in your chosen genre certified as?
These are the top ten films within our genre:
  1. Triangle (2009) - certificate 15
  2. Cube (1997) - certificate 15
  3. The Machinist (2004) - certificate 15
  4. Frailty (2001) - certificate 15
  5. Identity (2003) - certificate 15
  6. Oldboy (2003) - certificate 18
  7. Shutter (2004) - certificate 15
  8. Hard Candy (2005) - certificate 18
  9. Videodrome (1983) - certificate 18
  10. Jacob's Ladder (1990) - certificate 18
2. Who does your genre target?
Our genre targets a range of people. From the questionnaire we carried out we can see that it will interest both males and females with a age range of 16+ but mostly people between the age of 16-25.

3. What demographic groups are you going to target?
The demographic group we would aim for would be group B through to group E targeting middle management, 'creatives' and teachers down to the students and casual workers as we believe these are the people that will relate to our film well.

4.What audience theories may you apply to your film and its genre?
You can apply the hypodermic needle theory to your film genre. The intended message, information is directed and consumed by the viewer but as time has passed, research shows that it only has influences on selective audiences. Also the gratification theory (Mc Quail 1987) to our film, this can relate the audience members to the characters and plot.

5. What hobbies might your audience members have?
Our audience members may have sporting hobbies such as boxing or running as the film is thrilling which can relate to sporting interests. They may also enjoy science or photography to relate with the genre and media.

6. What rating would your film get in the UK?
As the main target audience would be 16, our psychological thriller would receive a 15 rating in the UK. The top ten films in our genre either received a 15 or an 18 certification so this is the restrictions we will be looking at for our film.

7. What other media works does this audience consume regularly?
A lot of people vary in what they consume through media. Some of our audience use the internet, for example facebook and youtube whereas others will read the newspaper/magazines and watch the TV.

8. What comparable media works does your average audience member like/dislike?
Other genres that our audience may like are, ‘horror’ and ‘thriller’ and are similar and enjoyable to our audience. ‘Romantic comedy’s’ and ‘comedy’ can be see as ‘easy viewing’ and would not appeal to our audience.

9. What comparable films has your average audience member seen?
Looking through our questionnaire we found that most of our target audience watched horrors and thrillers, they also said that they were looking forward to seeing the new film the Black Swan which happens to be a psychological thriller.

10. Where would your average audience member shop for clothes?
The average audience member may shop for clothes in low end shops that aren’t seen as labelled designer wear. However, they may be highly fashionable at the same time but not too dependent upon their image as a whole.

11. In what magazines and on what website would you advertise your film?
We would advertise our film on websites such as facebook, google and youtube. These are three of the biggest world wide websites so this would make our film well known. Also we could target magazines that our audience are likely to read so that they know about the film and interest them in going to see it.

12. At screenings for which films would you shows your film's trailer?
Black swan (2011) the latest psychological thriller being shown in the cinema, this would be a great film to show our trailer as the audience’s that  watch the film would has chosen to see that specific genre and film therefore would be a fitted audience for our trailer.

Psychological Thriller Moodboard

We found a number of different pictures and words that we associated with psychological thrillers. We then arranged them to give us ideas on what we could use within our opening as well as helping us with our ideas.
Our images reflect psychological happenings and relate to this.
Our pictures and words resemble the mystery of a psychological thriller and we have also included water and mirrors (the colour blue) which incorporates with the genre.

Discussing Genre

For our film we discussed a variety of genre ideas and a range of genres which would be a possibility for our film. We narrowed down the choice to psychological thriller, horror and comedy.
To help us reach a desicion we brainstormed ideas about each and listed strengths and weaknesses

By doing this, we could see the strengths and weaknesses of different genres and what would be included in each to help us make a decision on what genre we were going to do.
From this, we concluded with a psychological thriller for our opening. This is because we could add a sense of mystery and be creative with our ideas with a wider target audience.
With thought to setting, casting, props and mise-en-scene, this will all be accessible to us and as a psychological thriller does not necessarily have to make sense in the opening allows us to come up with creative and imaginative ideas and also gives us a challenge to work to our full potential.
Psychological thriller is a specific sub-genre.

Jelly Baby Task

We carried out a task using jelly babies in order to improvise and create a variety of story lines and openings to various genre's. We chose psychologial thriller. It also gave us an insight into devising film openings and the ranges in which we may consider. We used post-it notes and jelly babies to create different openings with regards to different genres which would help us when creating our own openings. To begin with, we thought up lots of different ideas and then finalised our best one. We used timings and editing details within this. As we were coming up with idea's for our opening, the jelly baby task taught us not to come up with a complex story line, and not to over think and complicate our idea's as it would make the task too difficult.
