Notes and Ideas on Audiences

1. How are other films in your chosen genre certified? What are the top ten films in your chosen genre certified as?
These are the top ten films within our genre:
  1. Triangle (2009) - certificate 15
  2. Cube (1997) - certificate 15
  3. The Machinist (2004) - certificate 15
  4. Frailty (2001) - certificate 15
  5. Identity (2003) - certificate 15
  6. Oldboy (2003) - certificate 18
  7. Shutter (2004) - certificate 15
  8. Hard Candy (2005) - certificate 18
  9. Videodrome (1983) - certificate 18
  10. Jacob's Ladder (1990) - certificate 18
2. Who does your genre target?
Our genre targets a range of people. From the questionnaire we carried out we can see that it will interest both males and females with a age range of 16+ but mostly people between the age of 16-25.

3. What demographic groups are you going to target?
The demographic group we would aim for would be group B through to group E targeting middle management, 'creatives' and teachers down to the students and casual workers as we believe these are the people that will relate to our film well.

4.What audience theories may you apply to your film and its genre?
You can apply the hypodermic needle theory to your film genre. The intended message, information is directed and consumed by the viewer but as time has passed, research shows that it only has influences on selective audiences. Also the gratification theory (Mc Quail 1987) to our film, this can relate the audience members to the characters and plot.

5. What hobbies might your audience members have?
Our audience members may have sporting hobbies such as boxing or running as the film is thrilling which can relate to sporting interests. They may also enjoy science or photography to relate with the genre and media.

6. What rating would your film get in the UK?
As the main target audience would be 16, our psychological thriller would receive a 15 rating in the UK. The top ten films in our genre either received a 15 or an 18 certification so this is the restrictions we will be looking at for our film.

7. What other media works does this audience consume regularly?
A lot of people vary in what they consume through media. Some of our audience use the internet, for example facebook and youtube whereas others will read the newspaper/magazines and watch the TV.

8. What comparable media works does your average audience member like/dislike?
Other genres that our audience may like are, ‘horror’ and ‘thriller’ and are similar and enjoyable to our audience. ‘Romantic comedy’s’ and ‘comedy’ can be see as ‘easy viewing’ and would not appeal to our audience.

9. What comparable films has your average audience member seen?
Looking through our questionnaire we found that most of our target audience watched horrors and thrillers, they also said that they were looking forward to seeing the new film the Black Swan which happens to be a psychological thriller.

10. Where would your average audience member shop for clothes?
The average audience member may shop for clothes in low end shops that aren’t seen as labelled designer wear. However, they may be highly fashionable at the same time but not too dependent upon their image as a whole.

11. In what magazines and on what website would you advertise your film?
We would advertise our film on websites such as facebook, google and youtube. These are three of the biggest world wide websites so this would make our film well known. Also we could target magazines that our audience are likely to read so that they know about the film and interest them in going to see it.

12. At screenings for which films would you shows your film's trailer?
Black swan (2011) the latest psychological thriller being shown in the cinema, this would be a great film to show our trailer as the audience’s that  watch the film would has chosen to see that specific genre and film therefore would be a fitted audience for our trailer.
